What is Zentangle and
How Does it WORk?
Zentangle is a mindful art method created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas that uses simple, repetitive patterns (called tangles) to form intricate abstract designs on small tiles, typically 3.5 inches square. The process begins by drawing a border and a loose “string” to divide the space, then filling each section with structured patterns built from basic strokes like lines, dots, and curves. There are no mistakes—every mark is part of the design—making it accessible to anyone regardless of artistic skill. By focusing on one stroke at a time, Zentangle encourages relaxation, creativity, and mindfulness, allowing the artwork to unfold naturally without pressure or predetermined outcomes. Zentangle offers many benefits, such as reducing stress and promoting relaxation through its calming process. It improves focus and concentration by encouraging attention to each stroke, while also building creativity and self-confidence by removing the fear of mistakes. Regular practice enhances fine motor skills, coordination, and problem-solving ability. Additionally, it supports emotional well-being, serving as a simple yet effective form of art therapy.

know the basics
To know the basics of Zentangle, it helps to understand both the materials and the simple process behind it. Traditionally, Zentangle is practiced on a small square piece of paper, usually 3.5 inches, called a tile, though any paper can be used. The practice begins with drawing a light border close to the edges, followed by a random line, curve, or shape inside the tile, which is called a string. This string is not meant to be precise; instead, it divides the tile into smaller sections that will later be filled with patterns. Each section is then completed with tangles, which are repetitive patterns made up of very simple strokes such as dots, lines, curves, and circles. These tangles are drawn slowly and deliberately, one stroke at a time, to encourage focus and mindfulness. After filling the sections, shading is added with a pencil to give dimension, contrast, and a sense of depth, often making the finished tile look more dynamic and three-dimensional. The beauty of the method lies in its unplanned nature—there is no erasing, no mistakes, and no expectation of a final outcome. Every line is accepted as part of the art, and the design naturally unfolds with each stroke. This simplicity allows anyone, regardless of artistic experience, to create something unique and beautiful while also experiencing a sense of calm, focus, and creativity.

Zentangle classes
In my Zentangle classes, I guide you step by step through the creative process so you feel comfortable and confident, no matter your skill level. We usually begin with a short introduction to Zentangle and its mindful approach, followed by learning how to create borders and strings to set up the tile. I then demonstrate a variety of tangles, breaking them down into simple strokes so you can easily follow along. As we draw together, I encourage you to slow down, focus on each stroke, and enjoy the process rather than worry about the outcome. We also explore shading techniques to bring depth and dimension to your designs, and I often share tips on how to combine tangles to create beautiful compositions. In group sessions, participants get to share their tiles at the end, which is always inspiring because everyone’s work looks unique even when using the same patterns. In one-on-one classes, I give personalized guidance and help you develop your own style and library of tangles. Each session is designed not just to teach the art, but also to create a relaxing, meditative experience that leaves you refreshed and inspired.

Guiding journeys through mindful tangles
I’m  Maanyata Dhameja, a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT39) and the heart behind Tangled Penwork.

What started as a simple love for drawing patterns soon became my way of finding calm, focus, and joy—and now I share that with others through my classes, workshops, and community events.

Along the way, I’ve created original tangle patterns like Fluxblossom and Chinar, explored playful surfaces like coffee-stained tiles, and led themed sessions such as Monotangle Mondays and Paradox Fragmentation.

For me, Zentangle is more than art—it’s a mindful journey, and I feel grateful to guide others in discovering its beauty.
